Comments they wrote

An Alpine Parrot native to New Zealand. We didn't see any in the wild, but we were told that they are very inquisitive and will often disassemble kit left around by tourists (cameras, cars etc) to see how they work.

Also known as a New Zealand Pigeon.

    That's a lovely cormorant.

What a great photo! How far away were you?

on black bear in shenandoah national parkat 13th January 2010 00:25

We weren't really planning for trips to whole countries... do you have any locations that are more finely grained? Alternatively, is there a feature we could add that would help you list these animals more effectively?

    on Noneat 13th January 2010 01:47

We ran away from this one...

    I think those are beavers.

    on Antwerp Zooat 13th January 2010 12:28

    What on earth is that?

    on at 13th January 2010 18:49

We promise people not to share their location, so we can't build that just yet - we'll certainly plan to make it easier to find other people's profiles though. We may add an option to opt-in to sharing your location with other members in the future too.

Better 404 pages is a very good idea - I think that could address your request for alias URLs too, since it would at least let /animals/firefox/ provide a link to the right place.

David: better feedback on activity around your photos would be great. I've been thinking a bit about sending e-mail - I'm not a big fan of sites that e-mail you constantly, but it would be nice to get a semi-regular e-mail pointing out activity you might have missed. Maybe we would default to one e-mail a week with ALL photos / favourites / etc your photos have received, and allow you to opt in to receiving that e-mail more often (or opt out of receiving it at all).

This is almost certainly my favourite owl - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es52WQKLumI

    on White-faced Scops-owl (Ptilopsis leucotis)at 16th January 2010 17:39

Pretty much - I scraped the titles and abstracts for the RSPB pages (which are listed on their alphabetical index page, so I only had to hit them 26 times). I've got a really basic tool for manually matching those with our species, since there are only 200 pages anyway.

The Wikipedia ones were extracted automatically using a tortiously complicated combination of Freebase and DBpedia. I'm planning to write that up in detail.

If you create a trip and add this photo to it you'll be able to mark it as containing a Barn Owl.

    Wow, that's an awesome shot.

on Eurasian Eagle Owl in flightat 29th January 2010 18:13

I'm planning on adding support for these, but I'd rather hold off until we've got slightly better species information - at the moment I don't think our genus / binomial / class information is of a high enough quality.

Thanks - they were really hard to take pictures of. There were almost a hundred of them swimming around the boat but I only managed to get a couple of photos where you could see more than just a grey blur.

    on Dusky dolphinsat 4th February 2010 21:43

Kellan - we're retroactively tagging photos now, but only after the owner of the photos has both opted-in to the new feature and reauthorised their Flickr account (since we weren't previously storing the Flickr auth token in our database).
