Help identify animals in other people's photos

15th January 2010

We've just added a major new feature to the site: the ability to suggest species for other people's photos. WildlifeNearYou has only been live for 48 hours but you've already added 2,846 photos! Unfortunately, less than 1,000 of them have been tagged with the species in the photo.

It can be difficult to tell what the species in a photo actually is, especially if the trip was a while ago. Our new feature allows other people to help out. Do you have a talent for identifying animals? Head over to the list of unidentified photos and start suggesting!

As the owner of a photo, you get the final say on how that photo is identified. You can approve or reject people's suggestions directly on the photo page, or you can use the new suggestion queue linked to from your profile page (the link only appears if you have some outstanding suggestions). Should you approve a suggestion, the species will be added to the photo and a corresponding sighting will be added to your trip.

If you don't want people suggesting species for a photo - you know it doesn't have any species in it for example - you can click the new "This is not a photo of an animal" button on the photo's page. This will remove the suggestion tools and will also ensure your photo doesn't get listed on the unidentified photos page.

Remember - a photo must belong to a trip before you can add species - or someone else can suggest them. Another excuse to create some trips!

We hope you enjoy helping other people identify their spottings!
